About VOO Calculator
Independent, one-person project. I’m Umer Farooq. I built and run VOOCalculator.com on my own — it isn’t a Vanguard product, and I’m not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by The Vanguard Group in any way.
Who I am
My name is Umer Farooq. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree, and I built this site because I wanted a straightforward, no-login calculator for exploring what a VOO (Vanguard S&P 500 ETF) investment could look like over time — without wading through an app that wants my email address first. I run VOOCalculator.com independently: no team, no outside funding, no editorial board. Just me, checking the numbers and fixing what’s wrong when someone points it out.
Why I built this
Most “compound interest calculators” online use a flat assumed return and stop there. I wanted something that also let you replay VOO’s actual calendar-year returns since its 2010 inception — the real up years and down years, not a smoothed average — so a projection actually reflects what holding VOO through 2022’s drop or 2013’s rally would have looked like. That’s the reasoning behind the “growth” vs. “over time” split you’ll see on the calculator.
How I build and check the numbers
Every figure on this site is either arithmetic you can verify yourself, or a number I’ve sourced and checked against a primary source before publishing:
- VOO’s expense ratio and dividend yield come from Vanguard’s own fund page, cross-checked against Yahoo Finance and StockAnalysis.com.
- Historical calendar-year returns come from Yahoo Finance’s performance history, cross-checked against Vanguard’s fund profile, and I recompute every worked example directly from that source data before it goes live.
- Price and yield figures are re-verified each January and spot-checked whenever I edit a page — the “Verified” date shown next to the methodology section reflects the last check.
None of the calculator inputs you type in — starting balance, contribution amount, share count — are sent to me or stored anywhere. That math runs entirely in your browser.
What this site isn’t
I’m not a registered investment advisor, broker-dealer, or accountant, and nothing on this site is personalized financial, tax, or legal advice. It’s a planning aid built around one specific fund — what you do with the numbers is your call, ideally after talking to a licensed professional who knows your actual situation. See the full Disclaimer for the details.
Found something wrong?
Tell me. If a figure is stale, a calculation looks off, or a source has changed, email me the specific number and where you found it, and I’ll investigate and fix it. I’d rather hear about a mistake than have it sit there.
